Factor To Consider Assisting In Avoiding Therapy Abuse

By Ines Flores

It is important to promote a healthy relationship between the therapist and the client. Therapy abuse is defined as using imbalance of power in the therapeutic relationship to manipulate, control and exploit their clients. This often occurs in many forms, for instance, therapists encouraging their clients to do certain activities that are not within the best interest of the client, encouraging dependency, using their vulnerability for advantage, abandoning clients as well as engaging in unethical conducts with the clients.

In most cases people seek therapeutic assistance for various reasons. That is to improve their condition by providing healthy relationship in which clients feels safe and secure. Therefore, building relationship trust is essential in providing a healthy and stable environment making it possible for the client to express their troublesome feelings and emotions.

During this process, counselors are viewed to be having significant influence on their clients and their information is often taking with a lot of interest. That is, their opinions are respected and followed with little criticism. In some instances, they are viewed as parents especially by individuals who had previously faced neglect and child abuse. They often accept, validate and approve these opinions and replace them with those which they did not receive during their early years. It can also be noted that such individuals are at higher risks than their counterparts.

Research indicates that, if a client was abused or abandoned child, they are more likely never to develop self-worth, self-esteem and appropriate boundaries. In the event that a person has not developed above things they are more likely to be a target for adult abuse. Notably, such individuals who have experienced an abuse in the past might not be able to distinguish between a violation and therapeutic process.

According to various research findings, abused or abandoned children are likely not to develop self-esteem, appropriate boundaries and self-worth. However, if a client has not developed such things they are prone to be target for abuse. Since, they have experienced an abuse in the past, they might not be able to distinguish between therapeutic and violation process.

One can recognize whether they are at risk of being a victim of such abuse. For instance, if something seems off, you need to trust your instinct and seek an alternative therapeutic assistance. When you have realized that your therapist seems to be unprofessional, humiliating, degrading, intimidating, making suggestive, sexual or erotic comments among others.

One might be wondering about where can seek help in case of such problems. You need to talk to a friend, parent or spouse in the event of such occurrence. You can also seek information from the websites about individuals or organizations that can help in such situations. One can also seek another therapist. In addition, you can contact legal counsel, or file a board complaint or talk to the police.

In case of such problems individuals need to engage persons who will not worsen their situations. This can include talking to parents, relatives, spouse and friends. Should also seek information from online data bases to find out appropriate organizations and individual whom they can reports such eventualities. In addition, you can file complain through the board, legal suit or contacting the police. These will effective assist in ensuring that the process yields the expected outcome. Selecting individuals who are professionally trained and are licensed to provide such services will produce the expected outcome.
