Components Dealing With Sunless Tanning Products

By Haywood Hunter

Sunless tanning, also known as self tanning, involves the use of specific chemicals on the skin to produce a result that is similar to a suntan. This has become increasingly popular over the past few decades, beginning in1960s, following concern of health officials who linked sun exposure and use of tanning beds to health problems, such as skin cancer. There are a variety of sunless tanning products available on the market.

These specialized goods are the healthier option for individuals who want to change the appearance of their skin without subjecting it to harmful ultraviolet rays. They come in a variety of forms. This includes sprays, gels, lotions and creams, and are applied directly to the skin.

DHA, also known as dihydroxyacetone is an active ingredient in many of these formulas. When added to skin, the chemical is able to temporarily darken the tone. This change cannot be washed off, however, it does fade with time and the shedding of skin. Generally these temporary tans last for days up to weeks. It all depends on the quality of the product and the overall usage. Most formulations do not contain any ingredients that offer sun protection and therefore are not designed for outdoor application or use.

Some formulas are carotenoid based. These products are thought to be more effective because the beta-carotene found int he mixture is not only permanent, but also, natural. Carotenoids are what give vegetables and fruits their natural coloring. Tyrosine and Afamelanotide may also be added to sunless formulas.

There is also the option of consuming tanning pills that often include some amount of beta-carotene, which does not have reported adverse effects. Still, excessive intake of pills has been know to create and unattractive orange or yellow hue in skin tone. These products may also include canthaxanthin, which is thought to be very unhealthy in large doses and the cause of skin turning orange and hive developing.

Bronzers are another option for altering the skin tone in a safe way. These may come as moisturizers, sprays, mousses, powders, gels and in some make-up products. The results received from bronzing is typically more subtle, but still allows for a natural glow and darkening of skin.

Overall, this technique is believed to be a safe alternative. It keeps individuals out of dangerous UV rays. And yet the users will still have the opportunity to get a even and natural tan. To accomplish this, here are some tips: exfoliate the skin before applying the formula, use light touch during the application, place it on the tops of the hands very last and allow liquid-based formulas time to completely dry.

Individuals who want a tan, but do not want to expose their skin to harmful UV rays may find that sunless tanning products are a safe and effective alternative. These are available as pills, creams, lotions, sprays and gels, and applied directly on desired areas of the skin. Typically the results last for a few days or weeks and is not something that is washed off, but instead, fades away. Note that these formulas do not include active ingredients to protect against excessive sun exposure.
