Counseling And Other Resources For Exoffenders

By Elizabeth Hill

When awaiting the release of a family or friend from jail or prison, there are several areas in which loved ones can be of assistance. In fact, there are a number of websites which provide information on resources for exoffenders and how loved ones can help once the release takes place. In almost all cases, there are at least, if not more than, eight ways loved ones can help an individual upon release from jail or prison.

The eight ways to help a loved one in this way include understanding any restrictions placed on the individual by the court, saving money, restructuring the relationship, locating potential food banks, churches and support groups and assisting in the loved one's job search while talking with children associated with the exoffender. If in the process, the individual violates parole or probation, loved ones need to report such behavior to the parole officer immediately.

Recently released individuals often have specific stipulations as a condition of release. These often include, electronic monitoring, drug and alcohol tests, community service, geographic travel limitations and a mandatory job search. In some cases, the individual must remain in a half-way house type setting for several months before being able to rent an apartment, buy a car or purchase a home.

Saving money in order to provide short term help upon the individual's release is also a good idea. For, depending on how long the individual has been incarcerated, readjusting to outside society can often be difficult. In addition, ex-offenders often need pocket money for bus fare, cab fare or gas to meet with parole officers, attend job interviews and for other essentials.

If able to provide monetary support to a loved one in this manner, it is important to let the individual know the help is only for the short-term. In addition, any support whether with related to cash, housing or transportation needs to be eliminated if the exoffender violates probation or parole. Otherwise, the loved one and ex-offender could both be charged with a crime.

Most loved ones become very excited before the release of an incarcerated friend or family member. In most cases, these individuals are envisioning life as it was before the person went to jail or prison. In some cases, things may have not changed. In almost all cases, challenges will eventually arise within the relationship. As such, it is important to have a one-on-one conversation upon release of the individual to discuss any emotional or physical boundaries, limitations or expectations.

Loved ones can also be instrumental in locating services such as churches, community service organizations, food banks, free clinics, job websites and support groups. In addition, locating a counselor whom can provide individual or family counseling can also be beneficial in some situations. Whereas, ex-offenders have also been known to join online support groups or obtain counseling from an online psychologist or psychotherapist.

In most cases, there are also a number of websites which can provide a list of services for exoffenders in the local area. For example, information on how to find a job after prison, resume writing courses, how to ace an interview and ten companies which will provide second chance jobs to those with a limited criminal record. Whereas, there are other programs directed toward community service work, emotional and physical health and volunteering.
