The Secret To Leaving AA And Staying Sober

By Nancy Cooper

Recovering from alcoholism is such a tough challenge that you require all the help possible. This is why most people turn to Alcoholic Anonymous. However, you cannot live in Alcoholic Anonymous forever. A time comes when leaving AA is the best option because it gives you the opportunity to move one with life. Without this support, a lot of people are likely to fall back. How can you continue staying sober without the support group? Here are excellent tips.

Create a smaller and customized support group. The rules governing AA are usually rigid. It may also bring a lot of people who stories and life you cannot identify with. Join friends and neighbors who are going through recovery to form a smaller group nearby. You can meet at your preferred time and engage in activities you can relate to. Since you know each other better, recovery becomes easier.

Keep your life engaged at all times. A lot of people are tempted into slipping back to drugs and alcohol because they have stumbled upon idle time. Being with friends, working long hours and engaging your family will help you remain sober. Ensure that the company you will be keeping and activities you are engaging are helpful. With unhelpful activities, the chances of slipping back are extremely high.

Monitor the changes you are making in life. Even the slightest change can be great motivation and transform your life forever. Take note of more disposable income because you are either working longer hours or are not drinking as much. Appreciate the better health you enjoy or a feeling of strength because you are not taking alcohol. Take pride in these changes and you will have the motivation to go for more.

Make changes you have experienced in life count. The fact that you are not drinking alcohol means that you will have more money. You also have more productive hours to work. The money you make or save should buy something that you will forever remember. Spend the time you have spared to learn new skills that will change your life. If these changes are not witnessed, there will be no point of dropping alcohol.

Adapt positive ways of dealing with stress and anxiety. A lot of alcoholics blame stress and fear for their slipping into alcoholism. This can be avoided when you take the right approach to dealing with anxiety and stress. This includes engaging friends and family, taking on profitable activities and being positive in your thoughts. You should be aware of your weaknesses when anxiety and stress strikes and take the right action. Know that slipping back will be more hurtful.

Set goals that are specific and with excellent rewards. Decide that you will not go to particular places if they are responsible for your alcoholism. Decide to drop friends if they led you to alcohol. Specify the time you will not make the visits or keep company. Further decide what to be doing as an alternative to improve your position in life. Once you have reached these goals, give yourself the reward as motivation.

Do not walk the journey of recovery alone. There are professionals who will help you manage your greatest points of weakness. Talk to them on regular basis. Through their support, you will make excellent recovery.
