You may find this surprising but using them in the wrong manner can actually bring about health risks and unfavorable side effects. Never take it orally. It's is one of those essential oils that are not meant to be ingested. Despite of its name, it doesn't really come from the same tree that produces green, black and other kinds of teas. Experts say that it is something that's highly toxic to human beings. Problems that could strike upon its ingestion include unsteadiness, confusion, rash formation and also coma. Animal experts say that it is also lethal to pets when ingested.

Remember to have it diluted first. Because it's so potent, weakening it with your choice of carrier oil has to be done before application. There are different dilution recommendations for different purposes. As a general rule of thumb, you should add only 1 to 2 drops of it to a teaspoon of your preferred carrier oil, be it coconut oil, almond oil or olive oil.

Perform a skin patch test beforehand. A day prior to employing it, check if you will have any unfavorable reaction to it. A small amount of diluted tea tree oil should be placed at the back of your ear or on the inside of your elbow. Wait for 24 hours to pass. If there's redness or itchiness or some kind of pimples appear, it means you are allergic to it. Immediately wash the area with soap and water. Needless to say, you should never apply it anywhere on your body.

See to it that it's not expired. Before you dilute and apply it, check the expiry date on the container. Something that is past the expiration date can trigger allergic reactions. When properly stored, it can actually last for 2 years. You should also refrain from using it if it's oxidized, which means that it has already come into contact with the elements for a while.

Do not give it to a teenage boy. Scientists say that it should not be applied on the skin of young boys. That's because hormonal disruption may take place. Such can trigger the formation of breasts in males, which is referred to as gynecomastia in the medical community.

Inform your doctor about your plan on using it. Generally speaking, it's something safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Because not everyone is the same, it is definitely a good idea to ask your doctor if it's okay for you to use it topically. Do the same if you have a known medical condition to ensure that no complication will strike.

It's a fact that tea tree oil is one of those essential oils revered for their potency. Using it in the correct manner is paramount. Unnecessary problems can be dodged if you keep in mind the things discussed above.
