During adolescence, teenagers experience a lot of body changes making this phase of child development a very critical one. It is the period when physical changes start to occur both internally and externally. At this phase, they will be tempted to experiment a lot of things. A major factor that leads to being bent to the substance is the brain functioning of teenagers. Most of the decisions they make at this stage get made by the emotional part of brains. It will get repeated many times, and in the process, addiction comes in.

There are also those that believe abuse will make the more active in athletics. Research shows that most teenagers in substance abuse are poor performers in school. This shows the relationship between the two, performance and abuse.

Puberty comes with weight increase mostly in girls. When some gain weight they feel bad about themselves. Their self esteem goes down too. To try boost the esteem, most will turn to stimulants so that they cannot feel bad even if others laugh at them. To endure this humiliation every day, they will have to take the substance daily, and in the process, they develop the craving.

Most teenagers pretend to know the medicine to take without visiting a doctor. Making this a routine whenever they are experiencing pain leads to substance abuse and addiction. Therefore, there is need to consult a physician before taking any medication.

In conclusion, it is good to remember some measures can be taken to reduce the use of the substance. Peer counseling should be encouraged and awareness created in school to help these teenagers. This way the teens will become more productive.
