By Raymond Carter

ADHD is the mental disorder which is characterized through the combination of hyperactivity, inattentiveness, impulsivity and distractibility. The usual behaviors they have are when they become disruptive, have trouble to get along with others and the inability to concentrate. Some people are questioning though if this is a real disorder or just some intolerable behaviors.

Spreading the word about the disorder is important because of this to help other people understand and learn more. This can be done if you become an ADHD advocate to those who are suffering from this specially if you know one. This helps patients receive the support they are looking for from everyone in the communty.

You first become as a student to learn more regarding the condition from different sources like other advocates. After being knowledgeable enough then you would become an expert and you might not feel like an expert but for others who have lesser knowledge, you are one. Then you start to educate others and get support for the ones needing it is when you become an advocate.

Being an effective advocate have some steps that are advisable for those who wants to become one to follow. First is by accepting your role and you would feel good when you are educating others on the condition and supporting those needing it. You would be knocking down the stigma and ignorance of people which is preventing them from helping.

Get educated and know more about ADHD so you will have more tools at your disposal so you could effectively express your opinion. You may do this by reading books and talking to mental health professionals that are experts in this. Talking with other advocates is another way because your experiences would be shared.

You have your own situation which is personal so start with it by supporting your patients, clients or students or by helping your child or children. This would help in gaining your momentum that could be used in helping others. Reach out to people in your community like those from your workplace, neighborhood or school.

Recognize that every one has a unique strength that can be used to spread your advocacy effectively. You might be good in bringing people together as well as talking to them or with using technologies like blogs or social medias where your thoughts can be spread easier and faster. These are very helpful when you try to reach out as an advocate to more people.

Join others such as organizations and support groups either online, local or national with similar advocacy that you have. Working with others helps in expanding the people you can reach which you can educate and help more of them. This is also how you can develop your skills further or learn more which is very helpful.

Record your thoughts and ideas and organized them so sharing them would be easier specially when you make copies of them for the newer ones to read. Learn the language associated with mental health which are not common and normally used. Communicate with others regularly so newer information can be shared immediately to help in your advocacy.
