Lipo Can Help Many Patients Lose Fat And Feel Better About Themselves

By Joshua Thompson

Since the earliest days humans paid close attention to their bodies and strived to achieve what they believe to be the perfect body shape. In fact, many people are willing to go to great lengths and expense to achieve the type of body they desire. Today, cosmetic surgery has become commonplace. People routinely opt for breast enhancements, surgery on their eyes, chins, thighs and many other areas of the body. Even in Walnut Creek patients opt for lipo if they feel that they are carrying too much weight.

Liposuction is not a new concept. It was performed as far back as the early sixties. It never became popular then, however, because the techniques were crude and patients often bled excessively, developed gangrene or experienced severe pain. It was only in 1982, when a French surgeon developed new technique, that this cosmetic procedure took off. Since then many advances have been made and today liposuction is part of the menu offered by most plastic surgeons.

Liposuction can be effective in removing excess fat from several areas of the body. Removing saddlebags from the outer thighs and love handles from the flanks is particularly popular. Fat can also be removed from the breasts, cheeks, chin and the calves. The hips, bags under the upper arms and the back are also very popular target areas.

Liposuction is not a miracle surgical technique that will make all unwanted fat disappear. Removing too much fat in one session can result in serious complications and can indeed affect the long term health of the patient. Patients should also accept the fact that this procedure is not a convenient replacement for exercise and for following a balanced diet.

Patients that will benefit from and that qualifies for liposuction needs to be non smokers and they must be fit. They should have good muscle tone and their skins should be firm and elastic. Potential patients must be healthy and they must not suffer from any dread disease, heart problems, hypertension, cholesterol or diabetes. Surgeons prefer patients that are within thirty per cent of their ideal body weight.

No surgical procedure is without risks and free of side effects. After liposuction, patients can expect swelling, mild pain and some bruising. This will disappear within a few weeks. Scarring can take up to a year to heal and in some cases the scars never go away and require further surgery to correct the problem. In rare cases patients develop infection. It is also possible that the patient end up with unsightly bumpy skin.

Patients should never opt for a surgeon that is not a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This society ensures that surgeons act with integrity and in a responsible manner. Potential patients should be interviewed and great care should be taken to ensure that they qualify for the procedure. The patient should be fully informed about the risks and the side effects that can be expected.

Liposuction is not a solution for everybody but many patients have benefited tremendously from this procedure. They feel better about their bodies and their sense of self worth benefits. Patients should understand, however, that liposuction is not a miracle short cut to permanent weight loss.
