Helpful Information About Plastic Surgery Dayton OH Patients Should Know

By Lelia Hall

Cosmetic surgery offers new hope for many people who are dissatisfied with an aspect of their appearance through surgical and non-surgical procedures which alter the look of the targeted features. Before choosing to undergo plastic surgery Dayton OH residents must ensure that they have a competent surgeon, understand all the risks, and that their expectations are realistic.

Sometimes a person is born with a birth defect or sustains an injury which results in the disfigurement of part of the body. In other cases, one may simply be unhappy with the size or shape of one of their features or an area of the body. The former is termed "reconstructive" and the latter "elective" surgery.

A general anesthetic is administered to patients undergoing surgical cosmetic procedures like breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tuck, rhinoplasty (nose job), and facelifts. Botox or filler injection, sclerotherapy, and laser skin resurfacing are non-surgical treatments that can be done at a clinic with or without local anesthetic.

Locating a skilled cosmetic surgeon is the first step for anyone who is interested in undergoing a procedure of this sort. Candidates need to have a background which consists of at least five years surgical experience, and two in plastic surgery performing a full range of procedures. In addition to this, the surgeon must only operate in accredited facilities, follow strict ethical guidelines, and be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Besides having a history of producing excellent results, it is also important that the surgeon be candid about the procedure and any risks involved, and be willing to answer any questions regarding it. Some procedure require follow-up care in the months after, so it is necessary for patients to feel at ease addressing any concerns they may have with the doctor.

There is always some risk of complications when a person is on the operating table. People with underlying conditions such as heart disease or hypertension have a somewhat higher risk, but in most cases the patient recovers without issue. However these potential problems will be explained, and the patient will sign a consent form which indicates his or her understanding and acceptance of this. If the surgeon believes the risk to be too great, patients may be denied the procedure in the name of safety.

Health insurance seldom covers the cost of cosmetic procedures, except where a medical condition is being corrected. Depending on the extent of the procedure, prices can range from a few hundred to thousands of dollars. Financing may be available from selected clinics, and there are also companies which can provide loans for cosmetic treatments to those who qualify.

If people choose to live a healthy lifestyle by eating right, drinking enough water, getting adequate amounts of sleep and exercise, and not using tobacco, alcohol, or drugs habitually, they may not need plastic surgery until they are considerably old. Although this is overall a very effective approach to improving one's appearance, it's still advisable to keep one's expectations realistic, since there is always a small possibility that the results may need "tweaking" down the road if they are not quite what one had in mind.
