Public speaking is often frightening. If you are afraid of speaking in front of others, take heart. You can get a handle on your anxiety. Keep these tips in mind when you next have to give a speech.

When you speak in public, remember that people will not automatically follow what you say. You must work hard to get their attention and even harder to keep it. Since this is technically a performance, you have to work to get the desired results.

Memorize your speech beforehand to reduce your anxiety. Once your speech is in your memory, you can then work on delivering it. With your speech firmly implanted in your mind, it will be much easier to naturally ad lib when you finally give it.

Understand the material thoroughly. Even when you memorize your speech, it is good to know facts, figures and even jokes and stories related to your topic. You can work these things into your speech to add time, engage the audience, and make yourself sound like a real professional. Have a question session at the end of your speech.

Make sure you are acquainted with your audience. If you can, try to learn who will be listening to you. Greet people as they enter and chit chat with the crowd before your speech. It can make it easier to talk in front of your audience.

Focus on the truth when speaking in public. Outline your story before your speaking engagement. It should have a beginning, middle, and ending that is clear so that you get your ideas out better. Ensure that your story is believable by using something that actually occurred in your life.

Get to know the room in which you are going to speak publicly. Determine if your voice will carry well without a microphone. Practice using any equipment you need so that you know how it works. Learn how you can use any of the visual aids if they are present. Figure out to make eye contact with those in the audience.
