Using A Self Tan Product In The Time Of Pregnancy

By Susan Jumonville

A self tan product is often used by ladies, and by men as well, to create a natural-looking tan without the need to suntan. The products are useful to someone who is worried about the damaging effects of the sun's UV rays. This worry is not unfounded, as it has been proven that the sun can dehydrate the skin, cause wrinkles and dark spots, and can even cause skin cancer. A good result can be achieved with a self tan product.

For expectant women, there is the need to still feel beautiful and self tan product is a quick escape. With many available options in the market, it is important to consider the safety of both the mother as a direct user and the developing fetus.

Pregnant ladies might also consider using sunbeds rather than a self tan product, just like many other people do nowadays. Sunbeds create a similar effect to the sun, also making use of UV rays, and therefore could damage the skin just like the sun. This is especially the case if they are used for lengthy periods of time.

It has not been shown that they will harm an unborn baby, but they could have a harmful effect on the mother. The beds, however, if used often enough, could lead to health difficulties. The complications could also result in problems with the mother's placenta, which would in turn, negatively effect an unborn baby. A safer option is a self tan product.

A sunbed is also very hot, and these intense temperatures are not advised for a baby in its first stages of growth. A self tan product produces no heat, and therefore will not increase or decrease the temperature of the baby. An expecting mother may also not like to lie flat for long durations. Lying in this way is not good for the baby either, as the mother's blood flow is hampered.

Self tan product use has still been considered a safer way for pregnant women to get a skin glow if one chooses to use sprays and self tanning lotions. These are considered safe for use on the skin and since they do not protect against UV rays, sun screen can also be use hand in hand with such products. Sprays and lotions only stain the skin and cannot be absorbed into the body and can therefore be washed away after they serve their purpose.

Sprays are not supposed to be used inside the body and therefore user should exercise caution by covering the eyes and the nose during application. The biggest concern with such products is the use of the main ingredient DHA (dihydroxyacetone) on the skin pregnancy notwithstanding. It is therefore best and safe to use self tan product professionally at least for the first few months of pregnancy which are considered the most sensitive and important in a fetus' development.

The main ingredient just mentioned also has a rather unpleasant smell, which a pregnant lady, considering her heightened senses, could find overbearing. If you are pregnant, test the self tan product on a small section of your body first, just to make sure your skin does not react to its ingredients. A self tan product can be used during pregnancy, but caution is still advised.
