Looking At The Popular P90X Plan

By David Morrow

As each year comes to a close and the time for resolutions rolls around, or when the summer months are in sight and people start picturing themselves in bathing suits, folks start thinking seriously about getting themselves into better shape. You may visit the gym, search online, go to bookstores or watch television infomercials to try and find a way to lose weight. But one of the most popular and most effective choices out there is the p90x program. Here we will learn why this system has become all the rage.

Before discussing any specifics, it is valuable to set a foundation, in a general sense, of what makes for a successful diet/workout plan. Most experts will emphasize that it is not enough to just cut back on caloric intake. Rather, a healthy diet must be married to an on-going and comprehensive cardiovascular and strength training workout schedule. So by extension, the best programs combine these two things.

The core philosophy of the p90x, also called the Power 90 Extreme is to marry a rigorous cardio and strength training system with a dietary supplement and nutrition program over 90 days. This concept has seen great results since 1998. The p90x and the programs associated with it are refinements of the original.

From a strictly workout perspective, one of the things that set the p90x approach apart from other plans is its comprehensiveness. Specifically it combines stretching, pylometrics, Kenpo, cardio, and yoga with strength training. Some of the details of instruction and format will be discussed a little later on. Moreover, there is a heavy emphasis on the idea of muscle confusion.

Muscle confusion makes sense. The thinking is that when exercises are repeated over and over, muscles adapt to the specifics of the certain ranges of motion. This makes them less effective over time as growth is hindered. This is particularly true when weight is not varied. The p90x strives to promote muscle growth by challenging the student with escalating demand both in weight load and repetitions.

As mentioned, the plan is on a schedule that requires an initial commitment of 90 days or 13 weeks. The package comes with 12 DVDs with professional trainers who guide the user through each set of exercises. Most of the workouts are under an hour, six days per week. The exercises are all explained clearly and may be played with music or without music.

Proper nutrition is an important part to any successful program. Using the p90x shows how vital it is to maintain the correct diet during the different stages of training. For example, the first 30 days call for low carbs and high protein. The final 30 days call for a more balanced ratio. This is closer to an "athlete's diet."

The p90x does require some equipment but does offer some flexibility. Resistance bands or dumbbells may be used for the strength building parts. An exercise mat and pull up bar are also strongly recommended. With your DVDs and equipment and a TV screen you will be on your way to seeing yourself in the best physical shape of your life.
