Aerobics for Beginners

By Travis Stephenson

Like any new exercise, even something as seemingly basic as aerobics can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. Always be informed about the exercises you plan on putting your body through. Aerobics can be enjoyable for beginners if you know how to start and how to pace yourself. Best of all, you can see results very quickly. Here are some quick aerobic workouts for beginners that will build you up to more advanced levels while also getting you into shape.

Find out which aerobics class is going to be best suited to you and your fitness level. It's sometimes not enough to just take a beginners class; every now and then certain classes are offered for beginners with specific goals and body types. This is important because not only will you be stressing your muscles and lungs, but your heart as well.

Aerobics can be as simple as a stroll along the treadmill. There is nothing wrong with going into a gym and testing out your limits and preferences on a treadmill, but never overdo it. If you are not accustomed to working out, you may be pushing your limits and not even know it.

Learning it from the ground up will make it a more enjoyable experience. Similarly, if you partake in a workout that is too carefree and light, you're basically wasting your time.

Simple exercises like jumping jacks and stretches are even considered mild forms of aerobics. That means at some point in your life-most likely high school phys ed courses-you have participated in aerobics. You can knock out a few of these in the morning before work or in the afternoon before hopping in the shower. Again, jumping jacks are obviously nothing fancy, but it keeps your heart rate up and your body accustomed to a mild work out.

More than anything, remember to have fun with it. Many people forget to enjoy themselves when learning a new physical activity. When you make it too serious, it becomes a chore and not an enjoyable way to get into shape.

As a beginner, the one thing to take away from all of this is to never over-exert yourself. If you feel that you are pushing yourself too hard, lighten up a bit. Let your body tell you when it is ready to move on to the next stage and not the other way around.
