Modern society is much different from the way it was years ago. It times gone past, people still cared for each other, knew each other and helped each other. These days, however, it seems as of nobody cares for anyone any longer. In the process, people become lonely, desperate and sometimes even destitute. Young people are particularly vulnerable. But with the many programs designed for helping the youth of Chicago there is some hope.
One of the reasons why there are so many youngsters that need help is that so many families are dysfunctional. Children grow up in single parent households where there is not time mutual nurturing caring and joint activities. Subsequently, many youngsters are left to their own devices and they are in great danger of being exposed to dangerous influences. There are always predators looking for youngsters that crave attention.
So many young people become adrift because they simply cannot find employment. Unfortunately, a poor economy and many other factors have seen to it that job opportunities are becoming increasingly scarce. These young people become desperate, and they often develop feelings of worthlessness. At least some organizations offer youngsters skills training in order to help them become more employable.
Young people are impressionable and they can easily fall into the traps of more experienced people that will convince them that they are worthless and that they have no future. In the process, they often become depressed and experience anxiety. They have no sense of self worth and they may even become destructive. Some organizations offer counseling to these youngsters, if only they can convince them to attend.
The other problem related to young people adrift is the fact that so many of them become addicted to drugs and alcohol In their desperation they think that these substances can help them cope. There are some organizations that offer rehabilitation programs but it is extremely difficult to convince addicted young people that they need help. Even among those that do get help, the success rate is very low.
One of the main problems experienced by well meaning organizations aiming to help young people is the fact that it is so difficult to reach them. This is often because so many of them are homeless and so they drift from place to place. That is why some organizations have set up places of safety where young people can sleep and get a decent meal. Such places allow other organizations to reach them.
There are many organizations that try to make a difference in the lives of young people. Sadly, almost all of them are severely limited because they do not have enough resources. There are not enough people involved. There is not enough money. There are too few facilities and it seems as if most people just do not care. The result is that the vast majority of young people are never reached in time.
If youngsters in trouble are left in the lurch then society has failed them. This failure will come back to haunt them in times to come. More needs to be done to create structures and to allocate resources to help young people in trouble to cope with life and to find purpose in their own lives.
