How Codependency Counseling CO Can Lead To Happiness

By Eric Wright

Codependency is very common. People will often see a spouse as being very controlling or protective. They may just accept this. However, it is not healthy living in this way. Often, it can lead to divorce. It is important to realize and to look into codependency counseling CO before it can become even worse.

A relationship like this can affect both partners. The person who is codependent is never focusing on themselves and giving attention to their needs. They are always giving so much. They, therefore neglect their own feelings. It is almost impossible to say no because they are people pleasers and it is important for them to make a person happy.

A parent who has a codependent relationship with their can break them down. It can lead to control and unhappiness. The child doesn't learn about independence. A codependent person will go as far as to block their feelings and emotions out in order to make others happy.

They are not known to have good boundaries. This is not intentional. They feel that they want to help, but don't realize that they are overstepping or intruding. With therapy, a person like this will look at their behaviors and the reason for their thoughts. However, one also needs to look at previous relationships. This goes back to childhood years, which is often the reason for codependency.

Most of the time, it will relate to a parent who was abusive. This can relate to drinking or addictions. There could be emotional abuse involved. They will feel the need to protect those in their lives based on what they have seen in their childhood. They may feel guilty because they were not able to protect and there is a lot of shame associated with this.

The more they help others, and neglect themselves, the easier it is to forget previous experiences. Their self esteem and level of confidence improves as they are praised by those around them. It almost becomes an obsession, but they don't realize how much damage they are doing to themselves and their family and friends.

A person who is codependent also displays signs that they lack self esteem and this comes out in the way in which they are always looking for praise. They find that this is the way in which they are accepted. A person who is helpful and useful will obviously be given praise and begin to feel uplifted, making them feel worthy. This is often what motivates to continue to act in this way.

Therapy can take many forms, but it is not always easy. A therapist will start off by talking to everyone concerned. They may then talk to individual family members. Some children don't enjoy talking in front of their parents. It can also be a good idea to talk on a one on one situation because this establishes a connection. Eventually the codependent person will begin to realize how they are acting and what has led to this behavior.
